Frequently Asked Questions
Not Getting Sound?
There are a few things to consider if you’re not hearing anything in the control room.
- First thing to check is the source selection on the Grace m905 (?) monitor controller. Have you selected the source that you’d like to hear? (DAW 1-2 for PT/Logic/Ableton Main Out, Prod Aux for ⅛” aux cable or bluetooth).
- The Grace m905 monitor controller has a wide range of gain (0.0 – 100), it’s possible the volume is just too quiet. Try starting around 50.0. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Focal Trio6 Be speakers have a sleep function! The other pairs of speakers don’t have this feature, so we recommend starting with Speaker 2 if you’re troubleshooting.
- Double check your I/O settings in your DAW. Are you using the TRC default I/O? We’ve set it up so that main output and headphone sends are easy to find!
- Lastly, there IS a mute button on the m905 remote – be sure that is not engaged, or you won’t hear anything at all!
How Can I Hear My Laptop Through the Speakers?
The quickest way to hear your laptop through the studio monitors is hooking up to our Producer Aux panel via ⅛” aux cable or bluetooth pairing. Then select “Prod Aux” on the Grace m905 monitor controller, and you’re good to go!
How Do I Use My Laptop to Record, but All the Rest of Your Gear?
- We’ve selected the Focusrite Red 16Line interfaces for all of our studios for a number of reasons – one of them being easy Thunderbolt connectivity. If you’d like to record directly onto your own computer, please ask for assistance from TRC tech support.
- In addition to Thunderbolt connectivity to the studio I/O and peripherals, we also have many connections in the control room to help connect your rig to the studio patch bay. Ask a TRC tech support team member for help!
Not Getting a Signal in Your Daw?
- The first thing you should check when opening a DAW on the studio computer is the I/O settings window. We have default I/O configurations set up for each DAW in our studios – be sure to import those settings (?) or start a new session with them to make sure the inputs and outputs are lined up correctly.
- Are you seeing level on your preamp? If not, the problem likely isn’t within your DAW. Be sure to apply +48v phantom power if you’re using a condenser microphone!
- Double check your patching and track input assignments in your DAW. It’s easy to make a small mistake!
How Do I Set Up My Headphones?
- In the control room, there are ¼” input jacks on both the Grace m905 remote and the rack unit. Press down on the Volume knob of the remote to switch over to headphone volume control.
- On the mic tie line panels located In the live rooms, booths, and producer desk in the control room, there are XLR jacks (Stereo Cue) for the Redco Little Red Cue Boxes and ethernet jacks (Hearback) for the Hearback Octo Mixers. These can be fed directly by outputs of your DAW (“Cue Main” feed Stereo Cue and Hearback inputs 1-2, “Hearback 3-8” feed Hearback inputs 3-8).
- The MON>CUE button on the m905 remote is a quick way to send your control room mix to the cue system. This feature mirrors whatever is being monitored in the control room out to the Stereo Cues and Hearback inputs 1-2. This is the easiest way to get headphone signal out into the booth!
How Do I Use the Patch Bay?
The patch bay is present in the control room to give the engineer access to all of the inputs and outputs of the equipment. If you haven’t used a patch bay before, no worries! We discuss our patch bay layout in the orientation, and TRC tech support is onsite to assist.
In each studio, mic tie lines are normalled to mic pres. For example, a microphone that is connected to mic tie line 1 in Studio C will feed the Avalon 737 mic pre (labeled “Mic Pre 1). The output of the Avalon is normalled into Focusrite Red Interface Line Input 1, which will appear as Input 1 in your DAW.
